Philosophy
Chris La Deaux began her private tutoring practice as an educational specialist in 1994. Despite students having significant strengths in many academic areas, Chris found that they often struggled to learn the times tables. Chris developed TURN the Tables, a multisensory method for teaching multiplication after carefully observing her students' individual ways of processing information. TURN the Tables utilizes visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile and rhythmic modalities simultaneously to help all learners reach their highest potential. The integration of the senses in the instruction of the foundational skills is critical for success for many students and will enhance and expedite learning the facts for all students. With a multisensory method to mastering the multiplication facts, every student will be successful.

This multisensory system of teaching and learning has been extremely successful with students of all academic strengths, including those who have moderate to severe learning disabilities. Students no longer need to go through the frustration and embarrassment of being unable to keep up with the class in math because they have not mastered the multiplication facts. TURN the Tables' use of predictability and sequential structure helps students achieve automatic recall of the multiplication facts with ease while strengthening their long term memory.
Dr. Joan Smith, Director of Melvin Smith Learning Center and Licensed Educational Psychologist and Speech Pathologist says, "TURN the Tables activates the whole brain for learning and retaining multiplication facts. By using visual memory, spatial orientation, language association, auditory memory stimulation and rehearsal exercises, this program anchors the multiplication facts for automatic access."

Memory -vs- Memorization
Teachers and scientists alike know that rote memorization, the ability to repeat information from memory, is the least effective way to access long term memory. Unfortunately, rote memorization (drills, flash cards and math worksheets) continues to be the primary method for teaching multiplication facts. This method often leaves students feeling frustrated and unsuccessful and sets up a negative mind set or math anxiety that continues into adulthood. Changing this negative mind set requires that the student experience repeated success which is accompanied by increased self confidence and trust in their capabilities.

Students retain:
10% of what they read
20% of what they hear
30% of what they see
50% of what they see and hear
70% of what they say
90% of what they say and do

Research tells us that the more we incorporate our senses into the learning process the better our chances of accessing our long term memory and therefore, the more efficient our learning process becomes. Using multiple senses in the presentation of material, also known as the multisensory method of teaching has a long history of being used for students with learning disabilities, however, we now know that it is equally appropriate for all learners. Using a variety of senses simply opens up more doorways into our brains which is especially effective for those students with unique needs.
For many students, multisensory instruction - the simultaneous use of sight, speech, hearing, touch, movement and rhythmic recitation - is critical for establishing symbol imagery, sequential processing and focused attention. Students are often mislabeled as lacking the intellect or the motivation to succeed. In truth, it is the method of presentation that is their primary stumbling block.
Another significant stumbling block is that having experienced little to no success in the typical rote memorization process of learning, students have little to no expectation of success in a new learning situation. Just as memory and multisensory instruction are connected, memory and mood are connected as well. Students suffer increased anxiety because they intuitively understand that their skill level does not match their intelligence level. They experience mounting frustration every time they find themselves incapable of meeting teacher’s, parent’s and even their own expectations.
Effective learning takes place in a multisensory, carefully structured, sequential, cumulative program, in combination with an acute awareness and understanding of the student’s lack of self confidence and their negative associations with math.

How It Works
 |
Oftentimes all it takes to give someone hope and confidence is for them to realize that all one needs is a different way to learn something new and that there are Ways That Work. TURN the Tables is an innovative, interactive program that instills confidence by assuring students that they will never confront problems with which they have not had prior practice. |
TURN the Tables is ideal for whole class instruction, small group instruction, remedial instruction, one-to-one tutorial instruction, for enrichment, for those students working independently and for home school instruction.
Throughout the instruction students are presented with visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile and rhythmic associations to the multiplication facts. Initially, students are asked to focus on the printed answers as they say them orally. Body movements such as dipping a shoulder and stomping a foot are added to emphasize particular associations creating additional memory pathways. Finally, in keeping with the multisensory method of instruction, tactile and rhythmic modalities are incorporated to open additional pathways of learning. The sequential nature and predictability of TURN the Tables increases student confidence & makes the challenge of learning the times tables Fun, Fast and Easy.

Your TURN the Tables Binder includes ALL of the following:
Method of Instruction - This script will guide you through the -step by step- procedure for teaching the times tables using TURN the Tables' unique multisensory method.
Answer Keys - At the back of each section you will find Answer Keys to all the workbook pages and tests.
Certificate of Completion - A Certificate of Completion can be awarded to students who have completed the TURN the Tables program. Students deserve to be recognized for their perseverance and hard work.
Glossary of Terms - Simplified terminology is used throughout the program for clarification and understanding. The glossary is for those students who want to know the technical names of specific numbers and concepts.
Place Value Chart - Starting with Section One students will be calculating problems that have products that get into the hundred thousands place. By studying the PLace Value Chart students will learn how to read numbers through the billions.
Pre/Post Assessment - Use this to accurately determine where your student/s should begin TURN the Tables. This assessment should be given again at the conclusion of the program to pinpoint areas that may need to be reviewed.
Review Tests - Tests with both 50 and 100 problems are included at the end of each section to help determine if the student is ready to advance to the next section. Each section includes two tests that focus on the number just introduced and two cumulative tests to check for recall of previously taught material.

| Worksheets include many examples for students to use as a reference. Having examples easily available makes it easier to recall the process. Students often complain of not having enough space to show their work on traditional worksheets. TURN the Tables offers ample working space on all of its worksheets. Each section, Section One through Section Twelve, includes sixteen worksheets, four practice tests and three answer sheets. Worksheets for each of the twelve numbers are presented in increasing difficulty from multiplying by one digit to multiplying by four digits. Students work at their own pace progressing as quickly as they are able but taking as much time as they need for mastery of the material. Worksheets should be corrected to monitor accuracy but not assigned a "grade". |
